SAT I (back to top)

The SAT I-- which my generation knew simply as the SAT-- is a standardized test that is accepted by most US colleges and universities as an integral part of the college admissions process. The results from this test are an important factor in student admissions because of what they reveal about a student's ability to think logically and coherently. The test has three major sections: Math, Critical Reading, and Writing.

The Math section tests the student's basic mathematical knowledge, and focuses primarily on the skills and principles learned in Algebra 1 and Geometry. The Critical Reading section is subdivided into two question types: Sentence Completion and Reading Comprehension. The Writing section is also subdivided into two major sections: Essay Writing and Multiple Choice. The former section allows the student to demonstrate his or her skills at formulating a logical argument by writing a 4- to 5-paragraph essay in 25 minutes; the latter section deals almost entirely with issues of grammar and mechanics (i.e., capitalization, punctuation, etc.).

A surprising number of high school students reach their junior and senior year with little or no knowledge of proper grammar, and many cannot manage to write a properly organized and executed essay. Because the SAT Writing section is fully one-third of a student's total SAT score, a proper SAT I prep course must include a great deal of focus on these essentials. Many students do fairly well on the Math section because they have gone far beyond Geometry in their studies, but those same students find the Critical Reading and Writing Sections difficult to master.

If you are a high school student-- or the parent of a high school student-- who feels that SAT prep would be helpful, please consider contacting me. Such prep is beneficial not merely as a way of improving one's chances of scoring high on the SAT I, but also as a method of improving one's general skills in math and English. We can all benefit from the ability to think more logically and rigorously.

Course options:

ST001 = SAT I (Math, Critical Reading, Writing)

GRE (back to top)

As of August 1, 2011, the Graduate Record Exam, a standardized test for those seeking admission to US graduate programs, now appears in revised form. The Quantitative section now contains fill-in-the blanks questions in addition to the classic single-answer multiple-choice questions, and even the range of multiple-choice questions has been expanded to include "grid in all that apply" formats. The Verbal section no longer includes analogies; as ETS has explained, the notion of vocabulary out of context has been dismissed. Instead, more stress has been placed on sentence-completion and reading-comprehension questions. As with the Quantitative section, multiple-choice questions may be of the 1-, 2-, or 3-answer variety. The Analytical Writing section has also been slightly altered. (For a fuller explanation of the changes in the revised GRE, see here.)

I have scored consistently in the 98th percentile in Verbal-- over 700-- and over 700 in the Quantitative. If you are an aspiring graduate student who has scored in the 500s or 600s in both Verbal and Quant, then please think about giving me a holler. I can design a course that's fully tailored to your particular needs-- one that incorporates teaching resources from the likes of ETS and Kaplan, as well as supplementary material from other relevant sources (e.g., Algebra 1 and Geometry textbooks)-- whatever it takes to drill you until you know your facts and principles cold.

Course options:

GR001 = GRE (Analytical Writing, Quantitative Comparison, Verbal)
GR002 = GRE prep 30-hour Special Package
GR003 = GRE prep 60-hour Special Package

The GR002 and GR003 courses are formally structured courses that will identify a student's potential weaknesses on the GRE, target those weaknesses, and systematically check student progress along the way through a series of diagnostic measures, i.e., a battery of tests and quizzes. Both Special Packages will include the following:

1. Initial full-scale diagnostic test (approximately 4 hours)
2. Individually tailored instruction based on the results of the diagnostic
3. An interim diagnostic (another full-scale test of approximately 4 hours)
4. Quizzes that target specific skills, e.g., certain types of math problem, vocabulary-building, reading comprehension, etc.
5. A final exam (approximately 4 hours)

What makes these packages special is (1) the somewhat more formalized structure and specificity of the curriculum, (2) the cheaper hourly rate ($45/hour instead of $60), and (3) the course length, which is a compromise between the shorter and longer "hour packages" offered (the standard packages are 1, 10, 20, 50, and 100 hours; while the 100-hour package has a slightly cheaper hourly rate, it's doubtful that most people will want to purchase that many hours).

Teaching/learning options:

1. Teaching via Skype
2. In-residence teaching (i.e., at the student's home; extra fee will be charged for gas and travel time if student is more than 15 minutes away by car)

[Basically, if you can't read the above, you're definitely not ready to take the French AP exam! If you're in a high-level French class and you want my help to rectify that, feel free to contact me.]

Course options:

FA001 = French AP Exam Prep (specifically for the exam; not a general French course!)

Teaching/learning options:

1. Teaching via Skype
2. In-residence teaching (i.e., at the student's home; extra fee will be charged for gas and travel time if student is more than 15 minutes away by car)
