Religion (back to top)

I'm assuming these courses are for interested young adults and adults, i.e., college age and above (high schoolers may be welcome, with parental permission). These courses will be formal in format (i.e., they will be run as if they were regular undergrad-level classes), and will begin in WINTER (i.e., January) 2012. Come back to this blog for announcements about what courses will be offered, what the specific starting dates will be, and how to download course syllabi. Syllabi will contain information on required textbooks, topics, reading assignments, papers (and their due dates), exam dates, etc.

The rate for these courses is always pegged at 75% of the rate charged by the local community colleges (i.e., my classes are cheaper!). Right now, as of July 31, 2011, Lord Fairfax Community College charges $381.95 per person for a 3-credit course (i.e., a course that meets three hours per week). For my own course, then, the charge is currently pegged at $286 for a 3-credit course, which is just under 75% of the LFCC tuition cost. As with LFCC, this cost does not include any textbooks or other course-related materials; the student will, after reviewing my course syllabus, be responsible for the purchase of any and all extra items required for my course.

My religion courses are modeled on a typical undergraduate (or graduate seminar) course: they will start in the fall or winter, last about 15-16 weeks, and meet for three hours per week. Papers and exams will be part of the course, along with required reading. In-class interaction will be primarily discussion-oriented, not lecture-oriented. I prefer a student-centered approach.

Other Considerations: Gas/Travel Fee (back to top)

There are two pedagogical options:

1. Teaching via Skype (i.e., via computer, using a fast Internet connection)

2. In-residence teaching (i.e., at the student's home; extra fee will be charged for gas and travel time if student is more than 15 minutes away by car)

Option (2) above, in-residence teaching, will involve an extra fee due to the travel time and fuel expenses incurred. The rates are as follows:

For travel time of 15-30 minutes: $5 per session
For travel time of 31-60 minutes: $10 per session
For travel time of 61-90 minutes: $15 per session

Gas prices in the Shenandoah area vary widely and wildly, changing day by day. I am assuming a price of $3 per gallon (which is currently below market rate), and also factoring in lost time due to the need to travel. I would encourage potential students to consider the Skype tutoring option so as to save money. Through Skype, I can teach more than one student in a single session, so it's still possible to enjoy discounts on the hourly rate if enough students can be recruited.

Packages and Discounts (back to top)

NB: Please note that no mix-and-match teaching methods are allowed. In other words, if you choose the in-residence option, you cannot suddenly switch to the Skype option in midstream. Be sure of what you're getting into before you sign up for any courses. This is the best way to avoid confusion and unprofessional behavior. Sudden delays, reschedulings, and cancellations are an inconvenience to both the teacher and the students. No one appreciates wishy-washiness. (Exceptions can, of course, be made for emergencies. The "sudden" scheduling of a vacation or a "sudden" business meeting is not an emergency.) Scheduling problems will be discussed further in the Refunds, Schedule Changes, and Other Policies section.

The basic rates (listed above) apply to all courses when the student is buying individual hours. However, package discounts are available for students willing to make a significant commitment from the beginning:

10 hours purchased at once: 5% discount on total fee for 10 hours
20 hours purchased at once: 10% discount on total fee for 20 hours
50 hours purchased at once: 20% discount on total fee for 50 hours
100 hours purchased at once: 30% discount on total fee for 100 hours and no gas/travel fee

The above discounts do not apply to the formal religion courses, which are already a 45-hour package at 25% below the local going rate (cf. LFCC).

Test prep courses can also be purchased at a package rate.

HOW TO REGISTER (back to top)

Method 1:

1. Select your course of study: Test Prep, Math, English, Foreign Language, Religion.

2. Determine your BASIC RATE by using the above information or by consulting the RATE CHARTS (the same as the information above, but in easy-to-read chart form). Factor in any rate adjustments related to the number of students and to whether the course will require a gas/travel fee.

3. Finalize the total cost. You will be paying a single lump sum. No installments.

4. Contact me (Kevin) via email and inform me that you wish to enroll (yourself or your child/children, or a group of students) in a course of study. Confirm that costs have been calculated properly, and settle on a mutually agreeable schedule for private lessons, to begin ONE WEEK after payment has been received (no earlier). My email contact info:

kevin.timeeffortfocus [at] gmail [dot] com

5. Send your payment by whatever method you and Kevin settle on. Credit card is possible (card info can be given verbally or via fax), as are cash and personal checks.

6. Start lessons a week later!

Method 2:

1. Select your course of study.

2. Email Kevin about scheduling and confirm schedule.

3. Figure out your BASIC RATE, factor in rate adjustments, then download and fill out this form (download as MS Word doc).

4. Email the form back as an MS Word file attachment. (See above for email.)

5. Send payment. For PayPal users, my above-mentioned email address is valid for PayPal transactions.

6. Start lessons a week after payment has been received!
