Math

THIS IS THE PAGE FOR PEOPLE WANTING TO LEARN (OR BRUSH UP ON) BASIC MATH SKILLS, FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LEVEL THROUGH GEOMETRY.

Math for Elementary Schoolers

If your elementary schooler needs extra help with math, I'll be happy to take him or her through the grade-appropriate basics, and if you're ambitious enough to want your child to get a leg up on the competition, I'll be delighted to go even further. Math for elementary schoolers is all about mastering the basics of the four arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It's also about applying those concepts to areas like basic geometry (area of a square, volume of a cube, perimeter of a rectangle), fractions, percentages, etc., and brings the elementary schooler right to the threshold of pre-algebra.

Course options:

MT001 = Basic Math, Grades 1-3
MT002 = Basic Math, Grades 4-5
MT003 = Basic Math, Grade 6

Teaching/learning options:

1. Teaching via Skype
2. In-residence teaching (i.e., at the student's home; extra fee will be charged for gas and travel time if student is more than 15 minutes away by car)

Pre-Algebra

Geared to junior-high/middle-school students, the pre-algebra curriculum covers the foundational principles and mathematical properties that are the bread and butter of a full-blown Algebra 1 course. I'm available either to tutor students already in the course at their school, or to help gifted youngsters get a year ahead by taking them through the pre-algebra course in parallel to whatever level of math they're currently learning.

A sample pre-algebra curriculum can be found here.

Algebra 1

Students either in Algebra 1 or planning to take Algebra 1 would be well advised to get some extra help. Much of the SAT I is devoted to both algebra and geometry; the mastery of these two levels of math is absolutely paramount for those who are hoping to score well on standardized tests. I'm willing to work within a county-mandated curricular framework, or to add to what the student is already learning by offering supplementary exercises or even an accelerated course. If you are the parent of a student whose performance in math has been shaky, please consider me as a possible pedagogical resource.

Course options:

MT005 = Algebra 1

Teaching/learning options:

1. Teaching via Skype
2. In-residence teaching (i.e., at the student's home; extra fee will be charged for gas and travel time if student is more than 15 minutes away by car)

Geometry

Geometry is the study of figures, their internal properties and relationships, and their interrelationships. It's a form of math that builds on algebra, and in most northern Virginia curricula, the course includes a section devoted to logic (think: converse, obverse, contrapositive, etc.). All math is logical; much of geometry is about using logic to prove why certain relationships are the way they are. Proofs are an essential component of geometry; learning how to construct them is a useful skill even outside of math: one's ability to see logical connections can, for example, help one construct better arguments, essays, and research papers.

If you are the parent of a student who is taking-- or is going to take-- geometry, please contact me.
